And learn the essentials of the business that will make your career a long and successful one. What are actual working conditions like in the Automotive Field? Our classroom and lab is located within a fully functioning General Motors Dealership giving the student a ringside seat on what is actually happening. Automotive Technicians generally work a standard 40-hour week, but many self-employed technicians work longer hours. To satisfy customer service needs, many technicians provide evening and weekend service. Generally, technicians work indoors in well-ventilated and well-lighted repair shops. Most automotive technicians use computer diagnostic equipment to diagnose technical problems. How well are Automotive Technicians paid? According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there is a shortage of about 60,000 automotive technicians nation-wide today. A high-tech career in this field offers mobility and job security. According to the Ohio Department of Labor completers can anticipate an average salary range of $14.00 to $18.00 per hour and the average journeyman wage is about $60,000 per year. Many techs are paid on a commission rate. Opportunities for employment, high wages, and career advancement have never been greater in the automotive field. Where do Automotive Technicians find work? Automotive Technicians are in high demand at dealerships, service stations, automotive sales, independent shops and specialty shops. Program Goals The goals of this program are to allow the student to develop competencies in areas such as Safety, OSHA regulations, personal protective equipment (PPE’s), tools and equipment, transportation systems, brakes, electrical/electronic systems, engine performance, suspension and steering, engine repair and heating and air conditioning.
